No one can touch Messi – Luis Enrique hails latest landmark

Luis Enrique hailed the continued impact of Lionel Messi after the Barcelona star reached 40 club goals for the eighth consecutive season.

Messi scored twice in Sunday s 4-2 LaLiga victory over Valencia at Camp Nou, following up a first-half penalty with a low strike after the break.

That double took the Argentina international s goalscoring tally to 41 for this season, continuing his run of passing 40 in every year season since 2009-10.

Luis Enrique was in awe of Messi s latest accomplishment after the match and reiterated how much he will be missed by Barca after his playing days are over.

It is amazing, Luis Enrique said.  He has broken every record and will continue to break more.

How marvellous it is to enjoy Messi. No one can touch his nu…

Bethany England joins Tottenham from Chelsea for British-record fee

Tottenham have signed Bethany England from Chelsea for a reported fee of £250,000, a British-record amount for a domestic transfer in women s football.

The previous record was the £200,000 paid by Chelsea to Manchester United in 2021 for Lauren James, sister of the Blues men s player Reece James.

The biggest fee paid for a women s player in world football was the reported £350,000 (€397,000) spent by Barcelona to sign midfielder Keira Walsh from Manchester City in September.

England has signed a three-year deal with Spurs, who are eighth in the Women s Super League, 18 points behind table-topping Chelsea with a game in hand.

A part of the England squad that won the European Championships last year, the 28-year-old has scored 11 goals in 21 appearance…

Balotelli en route to Marseille

Mario Balotelli has flown to Marseille to undergo a medical today (Tuesday) ahead of a proposed move from OGC Nice on a free transfer, according to the city s daily newspaper .

Having started his career with Serie C side Lumezzane, the controversial striker arrived to Inter Milan in 2007 and won three consecutive Serie A titles, including a 2010 treble under the guidance of Jose Mourinho. After that he moved to Manchester City and won the Premier League under Roberto Mancini in 2012. Halfway through the following season we returned to the north of Italy to join AC Milan, before making his way to Liverpool in 2014. When Jurgen Klopp arrived, Balotelli had been loaned back to Milan, and the German made it clear from the start there would not be a place for him in his team. In 20…

FIFA referees chief praises VAR but sees work to be done

FIFA s head of refereeing Massimo Busacca praised the implementation of video assistant referees (VAR) at the Confederations Cup but conceded the much-discussed system must be reformed and improved.

The use of VAR has come under the spotlight on a number of occasions during the tournament in Russia, most recently during Germany s 3-1 win over Cameroon in Sochi on Sunday when referee Wilmar Roldan sent off the wrong player before having his mistake corrected.

FIFA is not yet committed to using VAR at the World Cup in Russia next year and will undertake a review of its operation at the end of the Confederations Cup.

Busacca, a Swiss former referee who took charge of the 2009 Champions League final and officiated at the 2006 and 2010 World Cups, told a news conferen…

Manchester United taking abuse allegations made against Antony ‘seriously’

Manchester United are “taking seriously” allegations of domestic abuse made against forward Antony.

The 23-year-old was dropped by Brazil after accusations of physical aggression on a number of occasions since January towards his former girlfriend Gabriela Cavallin.

Antony, who has made 31 appearances since Cavallin made a complaint to Greater Manchester Police (GMP) in January, has denied the claims.

Sarri: Higuain should use Suarez as inspiration

Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri says Gonzalo Higuain should take inspiration from how Luis Suarez adapted to life in England as the Argentinian bids to crack the Premier League.

The striker has made eight appearances in England s top flight since joining on loan from Juventus in January, scoring just three goals in matches against strugglers Huddersfield Town and Fulham.

He was substituted in the 2-1 win over Cardiff City last weekend and did not make it off the bench for the midweek victory over Brighton and Hove Albion – a game in which Olivier Giroud, his replacement in the starting line-up, scored.

While reiterating his stance that Higuain needs to do more in the closing weeks of the season, Sarri says Higuain can take solace from the dramatic improvement…

Wenger rejects Ancelotti to Arsenal speculation

Arsene Wenger says he will play no part in choosing his successor amid reports Carlo Ancelotti could be the next Arsenal manager.

The Italian has indicated he will take the rest of the season off after being sacked by Bayern Munich last month in the wake of a crushing 3-0 Champions League defeat at the hands of one of his former clubs, Paris Saint-Germain.

Ancelotti won the Premier League in the 2009-10 season during a spell at Chelsea and he is likely to be in demand when he returns to football, with his three Champions League titles more than any other manager has won.

But Wenger, who eventually ended speculation about his future by signing a new two-year deal at Arsenal in May to extend his 21-year stay at the club, dismissed reports Ancelotti could become t…

Manchester City 4-1 Ipswich Town: Hat-trick hero Haaland sinks Tractor Boys

Erling Haaland scored a hat-trick as Manchester City earned a resounding 4-1 triumph over Ipswich Town thanks largely to a barnstorming first-half blitz at the Etihad Stadium.

Sammie Szmodics sparked jubilant scenes in the away end as Premier League new boys Ipswich stole a surprise seventh-minute lead with a brilliant counter-attack.

But Haaland levelled from the spot just five minutes later and, after Kevin De Bruyne capitalised on Arijanet Muric s error, had Pep Guardiola s men 3-1 in front with only 16 minutes on the clock.

The Norway star took home the match ball by lashing home a fourth in the closing stages but in truth the damage was long done by that devastating four-minute goal spree.

Szmodics squirmed the opener through the legs of Ederson but …

Manchester City want Guaita

According to a recent report from AS, Manchester City have made an approach to try and sign Crystal Palace goalkeeper Vicente Guaita. He has been a shining light for Palace throughout the course of the season thus far, with City wanting to bring him in as a replacement for Claudio Bravo.

City have already made contact with the 32-year-old and, in turn, Palace want to try and lock him down to a new long-term contract. That makes sense given the assurances that they can give him in comparison to Manchester City, who would purely be using him as a back-up and for competitions outside of the Premier League.

It feels like this would be a significant step down and in many ways, it’s a little bit insulting from City to assume that they can just expect players to come i…
